Schismatoglottis walichii, also known as the Dragon Scale Plant, is renowned for its stunning foliage.
The plant boasts large, elongated leaves with a velvety texture and a unique pattern resembling dragon scales. The leaves exhibit an attractive mix of green and silver hues, which adds to its visual appeal. It is primarily grown for its foliage, making it a popular choice among plant enthusiasts.
This species is native to the rainforests of Borneo and other regions in Southeast Asia. In its natural habitat, Schismatoglottus walichii thrives in the warm and humid conditions typical of tropical rainforests. It is often found growing near streams and rivers, where it benefits from the high humidity levels and dappled sunlight.
Care instructions:
Schismatoglottus walichii is a relatively easy plant to grow.
Light: The Dragon Scale Plant prefers bright, indirect light. It thrives in areas with filtered sunlight or partial shade. Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.
Temperature: This tropical plant prefers warm temperatures ranging between 20°C and 30°C . It is essential to provide a consistently warm environment for optimal growth.
Humidity: Maintaining high humidity levels is crucial for Schismatoglottus walichii. Mimic its natural rainforest habitat by misting the leaves regularly or placing the plant on a tray with water-filled pebbles to enhance humidity.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, but be cautious not to overwater. Ensure proper drainage to prevent waterlogging, as excessive moisture can lead to root rot.
Soil: Provide a well-draining soil mix that retains some moisture. A mixture of peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark is often recommended to create an ideal growing medium.
Propagation: Propagation of Schismatoglottus walichii can be done through division or stem cuttings. When dividing the plant, carefully separate the rhizomes, ensuring each section has roots and shoots. Plant the divisions in separate pots with suitable soil and provide the same care as mature plants. Stem cuttings can also be taken by carefully cutting a healthy stem and placing it in a suitable rooting medium until it develops roots.

WHAT GOES WRONG:
- Leaves droop, otherwise plant is healthy: too dry! Soak plant in a water.
- Leaves are poor color and no new grow – soil exhaustion – repot the plant or feed it regularly.
- Plant ceases to grow, foliage appears dull – temperature’s too low. Move to a warmer place.
- Lower leaves turn yellow and the drop – overwatering – allow plant to dry out until recovered and then water less often.
- Brown or black rings on leaf or at leaf edge – check that leaf is not touching a window in winter. Do not allow water stay on the leaf in direct sun.
